Lifetime Achievement: William Shatner
The 1st Annual Spacey Awards
June 26, 2003
Award accepted by William Shatner...
Welcome back to the Spacey awards, and welcome also now to Montreal. We're here to present our Lifetime Achievement award to the one and only William Shatner. And why here? Because he was born here.
Announcer: Actually, he grew up in that house just down there. Tony, can you zoom in and get a shot of it. Cameraman: Right there? Announcer: Yes, to the right. No, hold on. No, I think it's more to the left. Actually, maybe it's, um... well, he grew up in one of those houses. I'm not exactly sure.
But I am sure he went here, to McGill University.
And, here on McTavish Street, there's a building named after him, the Shatner Building. It's that one right behind me.
So, why was the man so honoured? Well, he's a Canadian icon; he's had a very long and varied acting career, including appearances in over a hundred films and TV shows. He was a Shakespearean actor at Stratford. He's even directed for movies and TV. But, he's not just a Canadian icon, he's a Canadian sci-fi icon. Who could forget his riveting performance in Nightmare at Twenty Thousand Feet, on the old Twilight Zone show. He's even been on Ray Bradbury Theater, The Outer Limits; he was even the great big Giant Head on Third Rock from the Sun. He's also written dozens of novels, including the Tek War series which was turned into a TV show that he Executive Produced. He's also the C.E.O. of the Toronto-based Core Digital Effects company. The list goes on and on. But, he'll always be remembered best for the role of Captain James Tiberius Kirk on the original Star Trek series, and in seven Star Trek movies. So, without any further ado, ladies and gentlemen, we present the Spacey Lifetime Achievement award to William Shatner...
I'm very proud and happy to have received this award.
I don't know when I became "spacey" enough to earn the Spacey award, but I feel that in a lifetime achievement, of spacey things, this is certainly perfect for me to have.

Shatner gets silly, about the Spacey's name...
I know that it was originally designed to be given to Kevin Spacey, and Kevin Spacey getting the Spacey award... the word "Spacey" comes out too often. I understand that. So it was not given to Kevin Spacey, and I am second choice. Shatner Spacey sounds good.
So, I'm very proud to receive this award, and I shall have it -- I shall put it somewhere. I'm not quite sure where I'm going to put it... but I'll find a place.
Thank you very much.
